Benefits to a Christian Early Childhood Education
Developmental psychology highlights the importance of instilling character education during early childhood (ranging from 0 to 6 years old), as it is recognized as a critical phase of growth and development. The experiences and teachings imparted during this stage significantly influence a person’s development throughout their adulthood.
Christian education plays a crucial role in fostering children’s faith, character development, and spiritual growth. Christian morals set up children for a lifetime of success. Faith-based classrooms are more likely to support children in individualized learning, supporting the child in the way that they learn best through their individual interests.
Research has shown that a child’s spiritual foundation and view of the world is developed within their first six years of life. When children hear consistent messages about Christianity at home, at church, and at school, it solidifies their understanding of God and they can practice his teachings in a variety of settings. Early childhood educators help to share these messages and model behaviors for young children in their care. They provide a safe learning environment where children can learn from their mistakes and feel comfortable taking risks and speaking out.
How do we implement a Christian Education?
Prayer: Young children often do things out of routine and habit. There are certain habits that we have as Christians that help us to build and strengthen our faith. Praying is modeled for children and becomes a habit early on. Teachers include prayer as part of the school day and teach children that we communicate with God through prayer. When our youngest learners pray, it strengthens their faith and unity and helps them know that they are one before the Lord.
Responsibility: Children take on different roles and responsibilities to help them take ownership of their faith. For example, choosing the bible story, worship song, or completing a class job such as watering the plants to help take care of God’s creation. Children in faith-based classrooms are known to excel in turn-taking, sharing, and using kind manners.
Bible Teachings: Children will learn age-appropriate bible stories and teachings through books, music, arts and crafts, play materials, nature, etc. Learning about the bible stories at a young age helps children develop empathy. This leads to more positive and productive communication. Children also learn about forgiveness and gratitude.
